Voting Question: How do I figure out whats wrong with my transmission on my 1985 Dodge Caravan 2.2L?

My car wont go passed 45 on the freeway cuz it wont shift to last gear. Then when I got off it had hard time shiftin into 2nd gear all of a sudden it shifted into drive after getting up to speed. then after stoping once again shifting issues. What should I do? Im from Washington State on a road trip and stranded in mason city Iowa accross the country. uhaul towing is way to expensive so thats not an option. If you can think of a temporary fix to get me to indiana 600 miles down the rd i could get a permant fix. either way still need to know what to do to fix this. dont really want to replace a trany. also the trans fluid is kinda brown not the nice red color. idk if that matters....
